Scary Boy and The Many Deaths of Scary Boy are now available online. The two volumes compile the bulk of the Scary Boy artworks from 2001 to 2008 and a third volume will wrap it up in a few weeks. After that it will have to be new material, unless i keep recycling (i'm seriously considering a redux book).

In the meantime here's a small watercolour done tonight, to test a new sketchbook.

revisiting an old friend

I've been on a sketching "frenzy" for the past few days. Nothing compared to the daily production of guys like Ashley Wood or the Black Frog but quite a big deal for me. And it feels good.
This might even lead me to do some pages sooner than expected.

This one was done this morning, on a 5,45 x 3,6 inches Semicolon book that i find so iresistible i even took it to bed with me last night.

Two things happened this week:
- i finished a (pocket-sized) sketchbook.
- i was asked (for my job) to turn 2D images in 3D.

Thanks to Corentin who provided me with a pretty neat tutorial i was able to do just that in no time. And now i'm aching to do some personal stuff.
But before that, acouple of tests.

Fan Art Friday!

I've wanted to draw Kamandi for a while now. I've always loved Jack Kirby's art but, as a kid, Kamandi was the one comic that stood up.
So here's a quickie, done without references so excuse me if the hair is too short and the pants too long. I'll try to correct these mistakes when i go back and finish it.

Dans le TGV Paris-Lyon, samedi matin, mon iPad en mains, je me demande si je vais écouter de la musique durant les deux heures qui me séparent de ma destination, ou regarder des épisodes de Californication ou de Hung, ou encore si je vais lancer l'un des nombreux jeux que j'ai téléchargé dernièrement. Finalement j'opte pour Brushes et voilà les résultats. Rien d'extraordinaire mais ça m'a fait du bien de dessiner a nouveau.
Je devrai peut etre prendre le train plus souvent.

Une fois n'est pas coutume j'ai commencé ma journée de travail en dessinant. Oh, pas grand chose. Juste de quoi m'échauffer la main et huiler un peu le cerveau. des "warm-ups". Je n'en ai jamais vraiment fait avant et c'est un tort.
Par la même occasion je continue d'expérimenter des alternatives a Photoshop, comme PaintTool Sai et ArtRage. Des petits programmes bien sympathiques, moins poussés et polyvalents que Photoshop mais vraiment intéressants pour tout ce qui touche au crayonné, les effets de peinture, etc. Et a une fraction du prix.
Ci-dessous, warm-up de ce matin, avec Sai.

Et là un autre croquis, crayonné avec ArtRage et mis en couleur sous Photoshop. C'est aussi mon premier dessin avec une Cintiq :)

Scary Boy revient très bientôt.

Les semaines passent a une vitesse, c'est a peine croyable.

J'ai juste besoin de trouver un scanner pour terminer mon dernier gribouillis. Gribouillis qui arrive a point nommé pour fêter la pré-publication du nouveau LEDA par Bannister, Nykko et Corentin. Ils comprendront quand ils verront. Enfin, peut etre.

Eh bien, pour changer, pas de nouveautés depuis un bail. Deuxième déménagement cette année et enfin un vrai espace de travail, bien dégagé et tout équipé, pour reprendre le "travail", les "gribouillis" et autres futilités que nous aimons tant.
Donc... plus d'excuses pour ne pas alimenter cet espace plus régulièrement.

here's a sketch done today, during lunch break.
it was done with Photoshop just to prove a point: i suck at digital sketching. for years i favoured Photoshop for quick sketches (like the first years of Scary Boy, all done that way) and more elaborate pieces. but now it always feels like something's missing.
when i sketch on paper it looks and feels better. i know some artists don't seem to have this problem, seeing how they sketch effortlessly on Photoshop.
maybe i don't have the right brushes, or the right method but it takes me longer to do a decent digital sketch than what it takes me to do it on a notepad or a piece of paper with a pen... any pen.

still, photoshop (or painter, etc) is cool for so many other things. it allows unlimited scope for experimentation. and for colouring it beats conventional techniques.

Big Numbers... Alan Moore's next masterpiece to be, a few years after Watchmen.
Sadly only 2 issues ever made it to print. But what phenomenal 2 issues they were/are.

Well the unpublished 3rd issue, completed by Bill Sienkiewicz before he handed the art reins to Al Columbia (oh, what a mistake that was), as been made available in hi resolution here. I haven't read it yet but can't wait to go home and pretend it's 1992 again.

La suite des aventures de SB se fait attendre et moi je ne trouve rien de mieux à faire que de passer une soirée a dessiner sur le bras de ma cousine Jennifer. C'était à sa demande car je n'ai pas pour habitude de dessiner sur les personnes de mon entourage, même proche.

Nous avons commencé par du lierre. Elle voulait quelque chose qui descende tout du long de son bras, avec des feuilles partout. J'étais un peu nerveux et pas préparé alors j'ai fait ce que j'ai pu et me suis arrêté a mi-chemin, avant que ça ne dégénère. J'ai utilisé un Pentel brush et ça m'a beaucoup aidé.
Un peu de gris pour le volume et voilà:

Il restait maintenant a continuer plus bas. Jennifer avait dans l'idée de jouer sur les 4 éléments et elle voulait aussi une carpe, une Koi (surement en hommage a l'un des personnages de la série Californication).
Nous avons trouvé une référence sur le net et hop, au boulot.
Il ne restait plus qu'a ajouter quelques détails pour assurer une certaine continuité entre les 2 parties du dessin. Voilà ce que ça a donné:
